For over a decade, Potomac Tutors has offered Exam Review Classes for students enrolled in the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
Potomac Tutors offers a range of Exam Review Classes to help students review material covered in a given semester. Our goal is to make students more knowledgeable and confident as they prepare to take their exams.
My child has a conflict with part of a class. Can he/she take just part of a class? Can he/she take the first half of a class one weekend and the second half of the class the other weekend?
Potomac Tutors does not sell half a class for a reduced price. Potomac Tutors is unable to accommodate any price reduction for partial or splitting classes. If necessary, students are allowed to leave early or arrive late to a class, however any missed material is the responsibility of the student. While it is not recommended, we do allow students to register for two classes and attend the first half of one and the second half of the other, however both classes must be paid for in full.
I signed my child up for the wrong class. Can I swap my child into a different class?
Please be certain of your child's specific exam dates BEFORE signing your child up for a review class. You will be required to enter the date of the exam upon checkout.
Due to the very limited number of students accepted into each review class, the classes fill quickly. While we will try to accomodate requests to swap classes, it is unlikely that that will be an available option. In the event that a swap is possible, there will be an additional fee of $25 per class.
1. What is an Exam Review Class?
An Exam Review Class is an intense review course designed to help prepare high school students for their exams. Each class covers one subject. Classes are usually six hours long, divided into two, three-hour sessions.
2. What do the Exam Review Classes cover?
The Exam Review Classes focus on the most important, core topics covered during the semester. Potomac Tutors has developed a basic curriculum for each of the high school subjects. We adjust the ERC curriculum primarily to complement the MCPS curriculum. However, we also address the needs of the students who enroll in each class based on their input and MCPS study guides. As time permits, teachers cover non-core topics that students in the class anticipate might be on their exams.
4. I have an exam review sheet provided by my teacher. Should I send a copy of it ahead of time so that the teacher of the Exam Review Class has a chance to look at it?
Yes! The more exam review sheets we get from enrolled students, the more we are able to tailor the class specifically to those students enrolled. Feel free to scan the sheets and them email them to ExamReview@PotomacTutors.com
5. How do I know the material covered will be right for me?
Because the Exam Review Classes focus on the core curricula of each subject, all the topics reviewed should be relevant for participating students, regardless of the school they attend. Six hours may seem like a long time, but actually it is a very short time to cover a semester's worth of material. Consequently, we only have time to cover the most important topics, topics that virtually any student in the country would be required to know of that subject. If a student enrolls in a class whose review is significantly off topic from what the student needs to be reviewing, the student should contact an administrator as soon as possible to discuss an appropriate remedy).
6. Is the Exam Review Class enough to prepare me for my exam?
The Exam Review Classes provide an excellent review, but the class alone is insufficient to prepare a student completely for her/his exam. We encourage all students to supplement the class review with additional study either prior to, or following, the class.
7. Does Potomac Prep offer any performance guarantee?
Potomac Prep guarantees that the classes will be conducted in a professional manner and that the teachers will be prepared and capable. We do not guarantee that all the material reviewed will exactly match that which will be on each student's exam, nor do we offer any guarantee with respect to exam performance.
8. How many students are in each class?
Generally, the maximum number of students in each class is eight. Sometimes the maximum number of students is less than eight for more specialized classes. Click on the "Details" button next to the class listing for information about maximum class size for that specific class.
9. Where are the classes held?
The classes are held at Potomac Tutors' center in Potomac Village. Click on the "Details" button next to the class listing for information about where a specific class will be held.
10. What should I bring to the class?
Most importantly, students should bring any exam review sheets or notes from the teacher indicating what will be on the exam. It is also important to bring your calculator for any math or science class. Additionally, students should bring those items they would normally bring to that class in school (pen/pencil, paper, notebook etc.)
11. Is there a break during the class?
Yes. There is one short break during each class.
